Château Lanessan is a wine estate in Cussac-Fort-Médoc, in the Haut-Médoc appellation of Bordeaux. The château lies immediately south of Saint-Julien, facing Château Gruaud-Larose over a waterway that marks the appellation border. Often featured in Cru Bourgeois listings, the 350 hectare (860 acre) Lanessan estate produces a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant Bordeaux red wine blend from its 85-hectare (210-acre) vineyards. The vineyards are bordered by Château de Sainte Gemme and Château Lachesnaye. Along with Lanessan, all three are owned by the Bouteiller family, which has held Lanessan for eight generations. The estate has documentation dating back to the early 14th Century, but the château as it stands now was built in 1878. As a wine producer it was highly regarded early in its history. During the early 19th Century it was considered unofficially as one of the Fourth Growth estates of the Médoc, being named specifically in an 1815 copy of the Bordeaux directory Cocks & Féret. Lanessan, however, did not submit any wines to be classified in 1855, believing that its reputation was secure and that there was nothing to gain. It was considered a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur until that classification was annulled in 2007 and replaced with the single-tier Cru Bourgeios designation in 2010. The vineyard is planted roughly 60 percent to Cabernet Sauvignon with 35 percent Merlot and the remainder given to Petit Verdot 4% and Cabernet Franc 1%. Exhibiting impressive concentration for the vintage, the 2017 Lanessan is an attractive, medium-bodied wine evocative of sweet raspberries, rose petals, tobacco leaf and forest floor. Supple and charming, but with sneaky depth and persistence, it represents a strong performance for this estate.
